Review of Once Were Warriors (1994) by D.l. W — 26 Sep 2007
Once Were Warriors is a film that deals with the clash of two different cultures through the relationship of the main characters of Jake and Beth. They are a couple who love each other but the violence, alcohol, and unforseen events of their family life cause their relationship to fall apart.
This New Zealand release is visually stunning. The feel of the film is one of a gritty lifestyle that is full of laughter, drama, friendhsips, and family clashes. The events that unfold during this movie will cause some form of emotion to rise in the viewer.
The cast of this film is diverse and interesting to look at on the screen. I like how there is a wide exposure of the different people in common settings. This film ends with Beth making courageous moves to save her family and to preserve who they are as a people.
