Review of Once Were Warriors (1994) by Terry S — 06 Oct 2007
Brutal, gripping, and sad as can be...
I saw this movie at least twice in the movie theater and I remember women gasping as the the violence erupted on the screen. No, it's not a movie about matial artists. It is a movie about a Maori family in a rough part of Auckland, New Zealand. We are introduced to Jake, a loving husband, and a strong father figure who just so happens to like brawling. But that is only an intoduction... as the movie continues we see that Jake has certain flaws (as do his buddies) whcih tragically affect his family.
Rena Owen, who plays Jake's wife in the movie, gives one of the best performances of any actress I've ever seen. She is tough, caring and fiery... to no avail it seems before the storm that is Jake.
Not for everyone, but well told and exceptionally well acted.
By the way, the young actress who plays the eldest of the daughters gives an outstanding performance in a heart -wrenching role.
