Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Aidan R — 10 Mar 2010
As far as Westerns go, I've never really been a huge fan; I find them all to be pretty much the same. But now I realize that I've been watching the wrong ones.
Once Upon a Time in the West weaves a simple yet powerful story of loss, betrayal, and facing inner demons as a notorious railroad tycoon threatens a recently-widowed woman for her valuable land, hindered by the actions of a sly outlaw and a mysterious loner who plays the harmonica.
The cinematography and pacing of the film is steady yet comfortable; it definitely has a slower pace than most other Westerns, giving the audience a chance to soak-up the atmosphere.
The sound is absolutely breath-taking; long silences mingled with natural ambience make the film seem more realistic and alive, giving the film a slow but intense pulse.
I was also blown away by the powerful one-liners delivered in Once Upon a Time; nothing's more badass than the film's opening scene:
Gunman: "Well, it looks like we're short one horse.".
Harmonica: "No...it looks like you brought two too many.".
Terrific film!
