Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Aya V — 15 Jul 2011
It is one fantastic western not doubt. If nothing else for it's perfect cinematography, which really makes me wish more films these days would pay that much attention and invest as much in the visual side of things.
Other than that it is wonderfully dark and has one of the most amazing, if not the most amazing final duel scene ever. Also Claudia Cardinale is really one amazing woman.
The only two things that prevent me from giving it 5 stars are:
1, Charles Brosnen. With all do respect he simply is not Clint and just doesn't do it for me in the same way. He comes across as a bit of a robot to me and that takes away (only a little bit) from the brilliant emotional impact at the end.
2. This is not something I usually have to have at all time, but in this case I think is missing, is a bit of sense of humour that Leone undoubtedly has in his Clint films.
Nevertheless, without a doubt one hell of a masterpiece.
