Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Sandeep S — 03 Mar 2012
Director Sergio Leone tries to top the epic scope of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly with this meticulously crafted gem. The story surrounds a wealthy railroad baron (Gabriele Ferzetti) hiring a ruthless killer (a cast against type Henry Fonda) to slaughter a family and therefore open up their property for development.
Things get complicated when a young woman (Claudia Cardinale) inherits the property and earns protection from the gruff Cheyenne (Jason Robards) and the vindictive Harmonica (Charles Bronson). Although a typical plot for a western, the events are enhanced by Leone's sure hand and the collective abilities of the cast.
Once Upon A Time In The West also gets a score from Ennio Morricone, and it ranks among the composer's finest efforts.
