Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Eric B — 22 Feb 2014
Sergio Leone had no intentions to return to the Western after "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", but he was typecast in a way, and he was offered no other kind of films from American companies.
..he almost gave up on Hollywood until he was offered the chance to work with his favorite actor: Henry Fonda. It's a good thing he was persuaded too...because this film is great. Leone's visual style and gritty realistic West are perfected, and his cast is quite good as well.
This is an epic Western on par with his "Dollars" Trilogy, and there was no way the man could ever top himself in the genre following "Once Upon a Time in the West". I personally prefer the "Dollars" films, and I think his best effort was "For a Few Dollars More", but this is a fine film.
