Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Liz — 19 Jul 2011
Modern generations can appreciate a classic, but some classics just aren't meant to live on. Sergio Leone, the genius behind "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", tried and failed to relive his epic masterpiece.
Throughout the film there are dangerously long moments of silence, and utter nothingness. The plot does not surface until the last forty-five minutes of the film, but at the same time, you rather wish it hadn't come up at all.
Stellar performances go to waste on one dimensional, uncharacterized characters. In the end, it seems like the only pluses to this ultimate minus, are the score and direction. An enjoyably western score compliments the well framed and elegantly created shots.
Overall, not much here but a waste of time. But then again, I expect something to happen in a movie that's 2 hours and fortyfive minutes long.
