Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Chris M — 02 Sep 2012
Badass, seriously badass. Up to this point Tombstone and Good, the Bad, and The Ugly have occupied my top spots in the western category. Add this gem to those two. Sergio Leone has crafted a slow paced masterpiece that has some extremely tense moments followed by quick, brutal acts of violence.
Leone has said that he isn't as interested in the violence as he is the tense moments before it. No surprise here that Scorsese and Tarantino have both sited this movie as a huge inspiration to them.
Do yourself a favor and watched the Blu Ray Restored version. There are two versions on the Blu-Ray, the restored version is the one Leone released in Europe and it is his vision. The theatrical cut was shorten for American audiences, which is an uneven version that lacks the depth and intensity Leone showcases.
One of the greatest movies ever.
