Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Josh K — 30 Jun 2013
Sergio Leone does it again with another great spaghetti western. This film is a little bit more serious in tone than his Dollars Trilogy, while it centered around the railroad business. Charles Bronson depicts a character known simply as Harmonica, who is tracking down a specific character with an unknown vendetta, while Claudia Cardinale depicts Jill, a widowed woman who inherits her murdered husband's property.
Henry Fonda is the real standout in this film, going against type and depicting a villainous hired gun. The cinematography in the film is absolutely beautiful, along with those long shots and slow takes, while Ennio Morricone's music is once again lyrical and absolutely beautiful.
The film is long, but wonderfully comes together, while proving that Leone is a genius filmmaker.
