Review of Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) by Shane S — 09 Nov 2010
A film that manages to be insanely brutal (but gets rated PG), but is just masterly made from a man who once managed to piss off Kurosawa for ripping off "Yojimbo". This film reinterprets everything about the classic Western, showing an anti-corporate stance throughout (personified by child-killing Frank, played by Henry Fonda out of all people) and making every good guy seem bad in some ways (though they're pretty good, despite trying to rape Claudia Cardinale).
Nothing to say here other than this IS and WILL FOREVER BE Sergio Leone's best film. Excellent use of his cinematography (beautiful vista shots, uncomfortable extreme close-ups, all in glorious Technicolor and some European Panavision), some nice scripting, and amazing directing.
