Review of Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002) by Jason J — 15 Sep 2010
I'm not sure why director Shane Meadows dislikes this dark comedy drama he made as I quite liked it. Robert Carlyle, Rhys Ifans, Shirley Henderson, Kathy Burke - they can't possibly make a bad film but it is the acting that makes it, not the script, which is meant to be based on a traditional western.
The story is very simple: man proposes, woman declines. Ex-lover returns, woman falls for him. Original man stands up for himself, woman realises mistake and gets back with original man. End Credits. Granted, nothing really drastic happens during the course of the movie but I feel the way the story is told was beneficial to the audience, with its "real life" feel.
The comedy is edgy and you can get cozy and settle into the plot easily while waiting for the next twist. Overall it's an enjoyable but lackluster movie.
