Review of Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) by J K — 18 Sep 2010
Not as strong a film as it's predecessor Desperado but still possesses Desperado's creative cinematography. All-in-all a must-have if you love the Il Mariachi series, action movies in general and Antonio Banderas letting loose his dark side (which he does not do on film very often).
What this movie had over Desperado was two awesome character additions in Johnny Depp's crooked CIA agent and Willem Dafoe's cold-blooded drug lord. A phenomenal acting cast, a decent storyline, just enough violence and edginess (see what happens to Depp at the end, yikes) and a fantastic ending.
A great way to end the storyline. Salma Hayek could have had more to do in the movie, but she was used exclusively in a flashback capacity. Eva Mendez was boring as always and I cheered when she kicked the bucket.
And of course no Rodriguez movie would be complete without great cameos by Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin. A fun movie to watch with a bottle of Tequila and a shotgun between your legs.
