Review of Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) by Dan D — 06 Oct 2011
While a solid film, it just did not have the same energy as Desperado. I thought Robert Rodriguez felt a need to create a trilogy after the critical success of El Mariachi and the commercial success of Desperado.
I think this film was more driven by the big name stars like Banderas, Salma Hayek, and Johnny Depp, among others. Depp was excellent as CIA agent Sands and his scenes definitely were some of the best in this film.
Eva Mendes was good but in this film, she is still more eye candy than great actress. Mickey Rourke was OK but what was up with his dog? Why was his dog in every scene with him? The worst parts of the film were the ones with Enrique Iglesias.
I have not seen him in another film since this so I guess either he learned his lesson or rest of Hollywood learned that Iglesias cannot act his way out of a paper bag. Great action sequences but disappointing overall.
