Review of Once Upon a Time in America (1984) by Sumit S — 08 Nov 2012
Reviewing this film is a quite difficult because its unlike the usual crime epics nor any of the films that Sergio Leone made earlier. A 4-hour crime epic, Once Upon A Time in America didn't live to my expectations.
The movie begins brilliantly but then goes for well over 3 hours covering themes of friendship, greed, betrayal, love n loss n finally coming to an ambiguous end. While the slow pace did give a huge amount of time for character development, there came a point when you do wish it ends swiftly.
There are no characters who you feel for, performances are good but not great, visually its beautiful but sometimes there is simply nothing going on in the movie n the whole 4 hours experience was fruitless in the end.
Not the best of Sergio Leone, not even close to his other greats. Disappointed.
