Review of Once (2007) by David S — 21 Aug 2011
Once is a movie that, to me, deserves 5 stars for a certain brilliance in one aspect, but in another aspect is a couple notches down. It is certainly a very charming, sweet story, delivered in a unique narrative styling.
That unique narrative styling is its extremely genuine, human atmosphere. So human, in fact, that we see people sometimes at their mediocre or awkward worst, just like in real life. And that's usually a good thing in this film.
However, some of the film is little more than an orgy of passionate folk music performance. Again, from the point of view of the characters, this makes sense, and is generally entertaining musically. From the point of view of the audience, however, I'm not sure it always works.
Perhaps it is good that it seems unedited. On the other hand, there was a little too much "guitar face" for me. Even with this sort of thing as a flaw, however, it is a touching film, quite worth your time.
