Review of Once (2007) by Jim N — 13 Dec 2012
I hate musicals but this is the closest I'd get to liking one. Luckily the film has an organic reason for all the songs as the main character is a busker and while he sings a lot it's natural. The Czech girl joins in on her piano at times but it's not like random people burst into song, instinctively knowing a stranger's lyrics.
The music is also very good (it shows the two leads are musicians and composed the songs themselves) but there is also a really nice romance/friendship that is understated throughout with a nice "trying to make something of yourself" story on top.
Sounds pretty generic but it's done with such earnest charm it doesn't come across as a british romcom at all. Plus the ending is far from predictable. A great little film with a killer soundtrack,.
