Review of Once (2007) by Chads — 29 Jul 2007
Digital video is often used by default, as an answered prayer to the economical wall that had previously stood between the filmmaker and his/her celluloid dream. But here, it makes intellectual sense that "Once" should be shot on digital video; after all, a street musician is the very embodiment of the DIY spirit.
"Once" looks right, a little amateurish(this filmmaker is not as accomplished as The Dardenne Brothers), but just like good indie-rock, the reduced budget and professional know-how are nullified by a suffusion of organic emotion that you can't get from a mainstream product.
"Once" achieves a tone that's seemingly impossible; it's diabetic-sweet without making you want to drink a lot of water. It's absolutely how this budding couple's love never truly breaks free from the abstract.
"Once" is a gem; every song, a ruby.
