Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Rachelle ' — 11 Jun 2009
A good film with great acting and a decent script. Thoughtfully constructed mise-en-scene. The historical context of the film does intrude on the interpretation of the story's moral- given that Kazan had recently "named names" to the House of Un-American Activities the theme of not being afraid to stand out seems petty, capricious and an attempt to justify his own actions.
That aside, as often tends to be the case in films from this era, the score is melodramatic and often to loud in the mix, obscuring the mix. Similarly, the court scene that should be the film's crowning glory is clumsy and poorly executed.
Anyway: a good film.
