Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Johnathon W — 24 Feb 2014
Breakthrough film that set a new standard in realism & filmmaking in both acting & direction. The cast is top notch, with of course Brando giving a tour de force performance as Terry Malloy, a simple but decent man who finally wants to do the right thing.
The cast is equally superb, thanks to greats like Karl Malden, Eva Marie Saint & Rod Steiger (while the "I could have been a contender" scene is clearly Brando's, Steiger more than holds his own in it as his brother).
Kazan direction, meanwhile, set a new tone in realism, with on location shooting (something rare at the time) and strong attention to detail. A true classic, that it may seem dated, in context changed the course of film history.
