Review of On the Waterfront (1954) by Ivan M — 03 May 2012
A triumphant film of the 1950s. The movie that made a star out of the great Marlon Brando, it is the tale of a young man, pressured by the mob-filled corruption which surrounds him to overlook what the right thing to do is.
When he unknowingly sets up an acquaintance to be murdered and falls for his grieving sister, things begin to get complicated. Brando plays the character amazingly intensely, it's well directed and I defy anyone who doesn't enjoy the ride.
The artistic factor is lacking, but it was never meant to be there in the first place as it is not an art film, it's a version of film noir which is heavily influential and interesting.
