Review of On the Town (1949) by Sherry L — 28 Feb 2009
Really nice musical with good music, skillful dancing, and very funny at the same time!
Three men from the navy, Gabey, Chip and Ozzie have one day off in New York, and during that day they are determined to find a girl to each one of them to spend the evening with.
Gabey (Gene Kelly) spots a picture of "Miss Turnstiles" and knows at once that, she is the girl he´s gonna spend the evening with. So Chip (Frank Sinatra) and Ozzie (Jules Munshin) help him looking for her. Two other women pass their way. An anthropologist, whom Ozzie falls for, and a taxi driver whom Chip falls for. So there he stands Gabey, still without a girl. But of course in the end Gabey gets his "Miss Turnstiles" (Vera-Ellen), and they entertain us with amazing dancing!
Like I said, this movie is incredibly funny as well, like Gabey´s "date" with Lucy (whom you will recognise as the crazy neighbour from the tv-series Bewitched!), and Ozzie´s one-liners just to mention a few things. And whatsmore this movie contains lots of simply great songs like; NEW YORK NEW YORK, I FEEL LIKE IM NOT OUT OF BED YET, COME UP TO MY PLACE, and the wonderful PREHISTORIC MAN!
Highly recommended feel-good-film!
