Review of On the Road (2014) by Eric G — 22 Oct 2012
Disappointment from the talented Walter Salles who made such great films as City of god or Motorcycle diaries. This one only finds the right rhythm in the last 5 minutes. The spirit of the famous book is only partly rendered.
The main weakness here is the script, drifting as the book does, but without the grit and with a tamed rendition of the alcohol and drug consumption. And without much of the thrill and craziness of Kerouac.
And so it becomes a long, very long, monotonous road. I became bored. But Garett Hedlund, playing Dean Moriarty (Neal Cassady in real life), is breathtaking, capturing perfectly the lost and drifting soul of an out of place generation.
Kristen Stewart is too clean to play Marylou although her performance is commendable. Nice photography makes it a watchable film. It could have been so much more.
