Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Craig H — 19 Jun 2012
Vastly underrated Bond movie. More epic in scale than any of the previous movies, this one suffered more from the fact the Sean Connery wasn't starring in it than anything else. A tough story for any actor to take over the roll. This one followed the book much more closely than You Only Live Twice, Goldfinger or Thunderball. Telly Savalas is the best Blofeld of any of them (better than Donald Pleasence or Charles Gray).
Lazenby was actually depicted Bond much more closely to the character in the book than anyone else until Daniel Craig came around. He was obviously an inexperienced actor, and that may have been a little bit of a weak point for this movie.
Regardless, it is extremely difficult for most people to be able to put Connery in the Bond roll in this story as it was quite different from any of the previous movies.
