Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Christopher H — 23 Sep 2008
One of my favourites. more grounded in reality than most. excellent car chase. infamous action packed ski sequences. one of john barry's very best scores. a cracking adventure movie. bond hot on the tail of blofeld throughout.
george lazenby has over the years been slated for his portrayal as bond, and yes he is a little wooden at times. but what makes him a real winner for me is the complete lack of baggage he brings to the character.
most other actors who've played the role have been or have become big stars, but lazenby is totally free of that, making him a really good pure 007. he is bond. not someone playing bond! it's a bit of shame he never got to continue the role.
so what makes this 5 stars... well the material really. the most romantic bond movie ever, and a tragic romance at that. the only one where he really falls in love (baring casino royale perhaps), to the wonderful diana rigg! and with quite possibly the biggest tragic shock ending ever! that even now surprises me that they had the balls to end it like that.
we have all the time in the world indeed. one of my absolute favourites. an action packed heartbreaker.
