Review of On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969) by Sgt. C — 12 Mar 2014
(77%).
One of the most misunderstood outings for the super spy, with new-comer to acting Lazendy taking over from the sublime Connery with mixed, yet unique results. This is a mostly gimmick free affair with more effort put on building layers to the Bond character rather than aiming purely for the action side of things. It's also the most romantic, with Bond falling in love with the great Diana Rigg rather than simply lusting over her, and the scenes of them together, particularly with the Armstrong theme playing, rank as the movies main highlight. Although the idea to have Blofeld played by Savalas doesn't work so well as he is so far removed from the last time we saw him in "You only live twice" that he may as well have played some other bad guy instead, and some of the ideas fall a little flat and overly drawn out from time to time (Bond undercover as a somewhat timid academic being a casing point). All in all though this is a good offering with one of the all-time greatest endings to any movie ever, and a must watch for fans of the series.
