Review of On Golden Pond (1981) by Clark B — 20 Jul 2010
If you haven't seen this, it's a comedy. A very funny comedy. It's enchanting, sure, and it stars some of America's beloved golden age actors.. yeah, yeah, yeah.. but it's a comedy. Critics seem to be so moved that it was Henry Fonda's last role, and so deeply touched that his daughter Jane co-starred at the very end, that they neglect to tell you how funny it is.
Did you read the Rotten Termater description? Same problem, they make it sound boring: "Beautifully filmed.. graceful... small, quiet ensemble piece." You get the impression it is just two hours of beautiful scenery and old people fishing, tears streaming down their proud elderly cheeks. "Ohhh, Normamn, listen to the LOOOONS!" Who would want to watch THAT? In fact Henry Fonda is hilarious as a profane old fart mentoring an arrogant young whipper snapper. The title "On Golden Pond" should be chucked and it should be renamed "Geezer and the Kid: The Reckoning." That'll sell it to the Red Bull generation. It has it's sentimental moments, no doubt, and there is some fishing, but it's funny.... Did I mention it was funny?
