Review of On Golden Pond (1981) by Christopher S — 21 Apr 2011
For the most part, this film was very good but without a doubt, this film's strongest points were Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn. Both won Academy Awards for their respective roles in this film and rightly so.
Fonda has always been overlooked during his heyday of the 1940s and 1950s, whether by John Wayne, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, and Cary Grant. On Golden Pond was definitely his chance to shine and he did so brilliantly.
Mark Rydell's direction was also very good which makes me wonder why he was not given more opportunities after this film. Was On Golden Pond the best film of 1981? No way but it was definitely one of its 10 best.
