Review of On Deadly Ground (1994) by Robin W — 14 Jun 2008
Believe it or not, there was a time when Steven Seagal was a fairly respected action star, but after reaching his peak of success with "Under Siege", he pretty much flushed away all his credibility with his directiorial debut.
Not only does he prove to be completely inept at staging action sequences, but Seagal decides to use the film to hammer home a very heavy-handed environmental message, which he delivers in a climactic speech that drags on and ON and reeks of hypocrisy; I mean, wouldn't making an action film in the Alaskan wilderness with numerous explosions do just as much ecological damage as the oil companies?! At least Michael Caine is over-the-top and campy enough to play the role as a comedy, though like "Jaws the Revenge", I'm sure he only took the role for a free trip to a unique locale.
