Review of Oliver! (1968) by Rebecca H — 13 May 2009
Having seen two productions of Oliver! and being impressed by neither, I thought I did not like the show. So the film greatly, and pleasantly, surprised me.
Although Oliver (Mark Lester) is an object, passed among characters to make a very simple story (thieves get orphan, rich person gets orphan, thieves want orphan back in case he rats), in the film he is more active than in the stage show and although the story is simple, it is compelling.
It is helped by a huge and convincing Victorian London setting, some excellent performances by the cast, breathless dance sequences and the casting of Lester as Oliver, a truly beautiful child who instantly wins you over.
If it falls down, it is that as impressive as the dance sequences are, my suspense of disbelief failed, and I couldn't stop wondering why these beggars and policemen were all prancing about in such a silly fashion. I like musicals and usually dance and song numbers don't bother me at all, but for some reason in Oliver! it jars - I can only assume it is because the sets and costumes are so realistic. Also, there isnâ??t enough of an ending, as the film nearly forgets to show us Oliver's finale at all.
But overall, riveting and enjoyable; this is surprisingly wonderful.
