Review of Oliver! (1968) by John K — 07 Apr 2015
It's hard to believe anyone does not like this movie. But I guess those who simply can't stand musicals may feel that way. This movie is the pinnacle of what movies could be back in the day when there were still legions of talented dancer/singers about. That's not today, because the studios went to computer FX, and the cost of producing an Oliver today would be prohibitive.
But I just wish to say that negative reviewers should accept Oliver for what it is, a big production with great music and acting. That's what it tried to be, so don't lambast the movie for not being a Fast and Furious or a Casablanca. I don't think it's so light as not to touch on any of the Dickensian themes. Sikes is a scary character and is not sweetened up at all.
