Review of Oliver! (1968) by Jason H — 09 Jul 2011
Dickens's purpose in wiriting the novel "Oliver Twist" was to expose the conditions of poverty and desperation in the underbelly of Victorian London. It would seem to be a strange subject on which to base a "Golden Age"-style musical, but Lionel Bart did an excellent job of balancing between the gravity of the subject and the levity of the medium.
The upbeat and somewhat comical nature of the first half of this film belies the darker, grittier scenes of the second half. Performances here are wonderful, particularly the three adult leads. Musically and visually stunning.
