Review of Oliver! (1968) by Robert H — 25 Jan 2014
Oliver isn't a perfect adaptation of the famous novel from Charles Dickens' but thanks to some great music, it is quite memorable.
The film has a feeling of being incomplete. Aspects aren't quite flushed out or they're simply glossed over. It's almost as if the viewer needs to have a prior understanding or knowledge of the story or the history in order for everything to be known.
Where the film truly shines is in the sets, acting, costumes and of course the music. You may not remember the film but if you're 20+ years of age I would hope that you would have seen it at least once. If that's the case, you'll easily remember the songs. I particularly enjoyed the big dance numbers myself.
Oliver isn't a perfect film but it does have a lot going for it. Fans of musicals are sure to enjoy this classic that will leave you asking for more.
