Review of Oliver! (1968) by Adrian B — 05 Jan 2011
One of the most awkward and embarrasing Best Picture winners in Academy Award history. This is not a great film. The songs are bizarre and not well sung, the dialogue at times is incoherent, and the characters are really annoying.
I don't even think the acting is all that great and the dancing is quite idiotic at times. This musical, along with Gigi, isn't even on the Top 25 Greatest musicals list, and sadly, for good reason.
This is one of the weirdest films I have seen, and one of the worst to be crowned Best Picture. I feel bad Carol Reed, considering he directed the 1949 masterpiece "The Third Man" and then this.
To all those who are going through the Best Picture winning films to just see them, put this one near the end of the list.
