Review of Oleanna (1994) by Dan H — 23 Sep 2013
A film about a teacher and his student, and their various interactions that ensue when he calls her in to discuss her grade. He attempts to strip away the labels of Teacher and Student, and this simple act has devastating consequences for both.
William H. Macy puts on a superb performance as the teacher and Debra Eisenstadt is pretty good as the student. The film has many millions of levels to it. It's a fascinating thing to watch, and the way it plays out is sad but captivating.
In the end, the film leaves the viewer to his or her own conclusions, and challenges the viewer as well. The rare film that is not only powerful, but also very very smart. Highly recommended.
