Review of Oldboy (2003) by Ryan K — 20 Oct 2013
Classic revenge flick that ushered in a new age of South Korean cinema. Choi Min-sik is superb as Oh Dae-su convincing conveying a person who was locked up for 15 years & seeking revenge and is well-matched by Ji-tae Yu's villain, who can barely contain himself as his plan unfolds.
Park Chan-wook's writing & direction is the real star, as he uses every visual trick in the book, with superb action scenes (the corridor fight is an instant classic) while building to a morbid tale of how revenge benefits no one.
A classic I can't see being remade well.
