Review of Oldboy (2003) by Rolf J — 02 Apr 2013
Yeah, so what's the point? It may be well-shot or moody or a Pulp Fiction-esque ripoff in a lot of sense, in the terms that movies of this kind can have its own genre really by now. But... whereas Fight Club and Pulp Fiction were good, and some purpose could be drawn from them, here it takes all the style of the genre and little to none of the substance that can be in it.
And therein lies the rub. It's like, alternative for alternative's sake, really. And not much more. So what's there to recommend here? What's the moral? That *insert spoiler here* is ok? I wouldn't say it's worth the 2 hours or so it takes to see it.
I can imagine how it helped shape the Killer 7 video game. But... just play that game if you want to. This movie is pretty much useless now. It's like Saw 7 in a sense, before any of the Saw movies came out.
But... I haven't seen any Saw movies past 2. I'm just assuming here, I guess, based on what I've heard of them. I dunno. I'd imagine it's not like too gross to see or whatever, just cover your eyes maybe once or twice, but there's not much there.
It's a revenge tale with nothing more to say than 'revenge revenge revenge revenge'. And then, 'revenge sucks'. Well duh. The concept's been explored to death. Anyway, I wasn't sure what range from 0.
5 to 2 stars I wanted to give this, but I guess I just ended up with what you got here. So yeah.
