Review of Oldboy (2003) by Ray H — 21 Sep 2013
This is the second of a Korean revenge trilogy, directed by Park Chan-wook. I have seen, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, which I thought was a much better film. Overall, I did not like this movie. Some Korean filmmakers seem to relish the violent and the macabre. This genre is OK, if done well.
I did not like the lead character. So, I found it hard to enjoy the movie. There was almost no one here to root for; or identify with.
Also, the various plot points were often fantastical. The story was too far-out to be believed or to be accepted as feasible. This film is firmly imagined as fantasy. This is usually not my cup-of-tea.
