Review of Old Joy (2006) by Jeff H — 18 Aug 2007
As close to Zen as the cinema experience gets. The opening scene sets the tone - Daniel London is meditating when the phone rings. His old buddy, Will Oldham (aka alt-country musician Bonnie Prince Billy) wants to catch up.
What ensues is a minimalist road movie in which the biggest events involve pensive glances, subtle gestures and facial expressions, and profound silences. Oldham's character is yet to shed his freewheeling, pot-smoking ways, whilst London's character is sliding into adulthood, fatherhood, middle-class suburbia and fading dreams.
Old Joy is a beautiful character study about friendship, connection and the inexorable march of time.
