Review of Old Joy (2006) by Treva W — 27 Aug 2009
Beautiful portrait of two men who are at a point in their lives where they recognize the fact that one has chosen the straight and narrow (wife & child) while the other has chosen free adventure. Neither of which regret nor deny those decisions.
Add the overlay of the Bush administration through talk-radio sessions and you have a commentary on what exactly are we all heading into. The forest. For a small film, it has really great camera work.
Wonderful scenes in the mountains and the hot spring. Will Oldham is such a natural in this role, he just takes life as it rolls along. And Daniel London is a comfortable contrast to the crazy. Don't expect this film to get too heavy on you, just some nice exchanges about life and the modern man.
"Sorrow is just worn out joy.".
