Review of Old Joy (2006) by Ben W — 10 Dec 2008
I rewatched this tonight. I was struck even more by the artistry at work in it than I was before. a beautifully quiet film. not a lot goes on but it doesnt have to. its got all the hallmarks of a great american indie film, sometimes for the worse but more often than not for the better.
this is a film that a lot of people would call you "pretentious" for seeing, but would have missed the real tenderness and honesty that the film is infused with. it may put too much pressure on the political weather of the time to account for the loss of purpose in the characters lives but the raw feeling is all there and a pleasure to behold.
"sorrow is nothing but worn out joy.".
