Review of Old Joy (2006) by Widget L — 23 Mar 2011
Dunno why I pursued this Kelly Reichardt opus after seeing her later, leaden Wendy and Lucy, but I did. OLD JOY has its moments of beauty and, like W&L, an exquisite sensitivity in its dealing with relationships, in this case between old buddies on a camping trip.
And, while it's not like 'nothing' happens, truly this is not about what happens, it's what happens in the spaces. And there are a lot of spaces. Reminds me of certain Asian national cinemas of late.
Maybe it's the northwest. Or the heat in my house. Or the constant dope-smoking. Very soporific movie.
