Review of Oklahoma! (1955) by Emily S — 11 Feb 2007
Some of the singing and dancing is fun (particularly the dream sequence), but the story is thin as paper and the characters are completely bland and uninteresting. Like nearly all musicals, it has weak songs, as well.
Normally, that wouldn't be a huge problem, but lacking a story or characters, the less-than-stellar songs are unbearably boring, which is a good description of the rest of the film. Except for Rod Steiger, who brings depth and humanity to the film's villain, the acting is mediocre.
