Review of Okja (2017) by Drew M — 14 Jul 2017
An endearing little film that, unfortunately, also struggles much with tone and identity. Bong Joon-Ho has crafted a film that can be the sweatest of stories, but also the most jarringly strange and horrific. These tones CAN work together, but not with this script. Just as the movie has you captivated, it rips you out with an odd turn. Jake Gyllenhaal is absolutely horrible and is giving a performance that seems to be from an entirely different movie.
That is the biggest issue with the film. Inconsistency. That being said, it is also a bittersweet and entertaining watch with some great cinematography and a loveable lead. It's worth giving a shot.
