Review of Okja (2017) by Josh H — 19 Oct 2018
Okja is a phenomenal hidden-gem, tucked away amongst the several blockbuster films packed onto Netflix. This bilingual English-Korean masterpiece is a must-watch of the decade.
Mija, the main character, and her pet superpig Okja have one of the best depictions of a heartwarming, human-animal relationship in any film I've ever seen. This, in combination with the anti-GMO message, proves a powerful message - even the most stubborn of meat-eaters will begin to question the ethics of their lifestyle. This is what makes movies great; challenging society to reflect upon itself, rather than pushing out generic plot lines for profit.
The cinematography and production overall were perfect, and the South Korean mountains on which Mija live look truly beautiful. The blending of Anglosphere and Korean culture within this movie are something that can be absolutely commended.
Action junkies may miss the film's beauty and struggle to enjoy the emotional storyline. However, if you're into deep, philosophical films, this is something you cannot miss. This is a film I don't think I'll forget for a while.
