Review of Office Space (1999) by Blake P — 08 Mar 2012
Peter Gibbons (Livingston) is a young adult, but his life is slowly but surely being ruined by his dead end job at a god-awful corporate office, in which he pretty much lives life in a cubicle. His girlfriend is concerned by how depressed Peter has been acting, so she sets up an appointment at a hypnotherapist to see what the matter is.
As the specialist works his magic, he has a heart attack and dies, leaving Peter in an endless hypnotic state where he feels more at peace. He soon starts dating an equally tired waitress Joanna (Aniston), but just as that starts he and his office buddies (Herman, Naidu) set up a plot to steal money from the office, a plot that is strangely similar to "Superman III" .
.. The word satire is thrown around so much nowadays, but I think from now on when I think of that "s" word, for sure what'll pop into my brain will be "Office Space". The film is hilarious, and unfortunately half the stuff I was laughing at I knew could definitely be true for some in real life-- but that's the beauty of this film.
The characters, the laughs, and the situations are all just so brutally realistic, making this a movie that is not only unique and entertaining, but so right on the money. The writing of this film is a work of beauty, and instead of keeping the laughs as part of the plot it is instead part of the movie, and the acting (with one big name, Aniston, who seems to shine the brightest in independent films) is underplayed but perfect.
"Office Space" will definitely become a future classic if it isn't all ready. Hey office drones out there, he's a documentary about your life! Watch this sucker. Recommended.
