Review of Of Time and the City (2008) by Lou S — 03 May 2009
Rented this out on love film as it wasn't released at my local multiplex and was mark kermodes favourite film of 2008, and the guardian gave it a 5 star rating. So I must say I thought this was going to be something really special.
How disappointed was I!! This film for me belongs in the walker art gallery in liverpool and not on the shelves of our video stores. I watched this film in 3 attempts and 2 of those attempts I fell asleep.
To watch b&w stills and video archive footage demands a great deal of patience as this is a very slow and boring viewing experience. However, Terence Davies narration is rather good and his love and admiration for liverpool is inspiring but as its being told through his selections of poetry and quotes, and for me this didn't help me engage with liverpool's past or present at all.
This for me is a turner prize submission where the design brief is to advertise for the liverpool tourist board and promote it's capital of culture. A real bore!!
