A simple story, told well is always going to be a joy.
I'm pretty sure this has, and can be done better. The story itself is sort of timeless. Watching it, I suddenly realised how many times elements or whole arcs have been homaged, copied or just plain stolen in other movies or Tv that i've seen. It's like these characters are the blueprints to a thouand other wannabe's. It's was almost bizarre.
The story is one that is just about the Human conditon. Circumstance, relationships, obligations and hope. It's obviously dipped in tradegy as well and frankly the story alone is enough to make this a great movie.
That said, this movie ain't without it's faults. I don't really feel the relationship with Sinise and Malkovich for one. Which is a pretty big misstep.There's moments, but that's all it is. Sinise has moments where you really feel his struggle and others where he's almost unreadable. Malcovich gives us something altogether diffrent. I've never seen him so vunerable and it was quite daunting at first. But he's brilliant here. Not at all what I expected. But it worked.
The supporting cast are also really good. John Terry is a great "good guy", miles bennet dyson makes so much from a small, yet important role and Sherilyn Fenn is sort of a delight.
All in all, this has the Da vinci codes about it. At it's heart it's a great, great story, but it's sort of a flawed movie. The diffrence is, this movie is still a sound watch, rewatchable and layered. The Da vinci code was just shit.
Of Mice and Men is something to watch if only for the story. This will be done better in the years ahead and more than likely mulitple times. Hell this is like the third remake already. But if you like a solid human story, told simply, of which the film indrusty seems to forget the audience likes of late, this is a fine place to start.
