Director/co-writer Gary Sinise's gorgeous adaptation of John Steinbeck's Depression era literary masterpiece is a handsomely produced tale about the pursuit of the American Dream. So passionate about the material, Sinise also stars as George Milton, the street-smart best friend and guardian of gentle giant Lennie Small; an excellent John Malkovich who, despite not having the physical grandeur one envisions the character, offers a slurred speech, childlike portrayal that had yet to be depicted on screen (it was adapted for film and television four previous times).

The strength of the supporting cast also flesh out the unfolding drama (Ray Walton, Sherilyn Fenn and John Terry are all solid), but there's no denying that this particular film resonates because of its enduring themes, humane characters and Steinbeck's perfect blueprint.
