Review of Of Gods and Men (2010) by Eric G — 13 Dec 2010
Go and see it!! Unfortunately a true story during the increasingly unstable political situation in Algeria in 1996 and the rise of violent fundamentalism. This is the deeply spiritual and moving story of monks as they fear for their lives and confront their doubts and faith. The story is simple but is richly multi-layered and addresses complex questions: faith, commitment, fear, solidarity, peer pressure, the role of religion, extremism, colonialism... The film is slow and takes time to paint in details the psychological portraits of the monks as the outside situation deteriorates. The tension slowly rises to an uncomfortable level up to the very end.
The photography is beautiful and the close shots of the monks is an integral part of understanding what goes on inside. An understated masterpiece.
