Beautiful! Slowly we come to understand why these monks decided to stay when certain death was awaiting them.
When a monk tells his Algerian, most likely Muslim, neighbors: "we're birds sitting on a branch, we don't know yet if we'll fly away", a woman from the village replies "you're the branch, we're the birds. If you leave, where will we perch ourselves?". I think this is the perfect summary of this movie.
